Ms. Kamen (Angela Page) owns and operates The Barnyard, a juke-joint in Clarksdale, Mississippi, where much ado is made about class and racism and its effect on southern society. Ms. Kamen controls the racial climate among her black workers: Ralph, Skeeter, Purline, Fannie, Rosa, Ezekiel and Bessie. But in the Spring of 1940, the climate control goes to Thurgood, a 5th grader and Skeeter's nephew, whose school report helps trigger a change no one expected.
